YouTube is making it easier for creators to format and turn their longer videos into Shorts, to compete with TikTok videos.
By adding the tool “Edit into Short”, the platform has made it quite simple to format videos in its iOS and Android app.
Creators can select up to 60 seconds of the video to edit and bring into a Shorts clip right on the app. They can even add text, filters, and additional videos from the Camera or Library.

YouTube intends to link the original long video to the Short clip to use as a promotional tool for creators. This is a key incentive for YouTube as it begins to delve deeper into monetizing content on its platform. It even set up a fund that paid creators for uploading Shorts.
The new tool however can’t be used on other users’ uploads, showing up in the Create menu of videos only you’ve uploaded. According to YouTube, approximately 1.5 billion people watch Shorts each month.
While the video-sharing platform isn’t completely removing traditional long videos, it’s encouraging creators to convert previous and current videos into Shorts.
